The Work-Life Balance Dilemma

work-life-balance

Living in big cities is not easy, especially when it comes to work-life balance.  In Hong Kong, this concept can literally be non-existing.  As one of the cities with the fastest pace in the world, lights are always on, and people are always working.  However, as human-beings, there are still many things we care about apart from work.  Career, family, sleep, friendship, a fit body, children, hobbies … you name it.

Here are some tips on how to get the most out of your 24-hours day, and try to achieve the so-called “work-life balance”:

  1. Redefine your goals

The concept of balance is abstract and unmeasurable.  Therefore, don’t waste your time trying to achieve it as your ultimate goal.  Instead, it is much more rewarding to figure out what your actual, concrete goals are and set a plan in achieving them.

  1. Find balance in different stages of life

Your desires and mindsets will certainly be different in your 20s, 30s, 40s, and so on.  Therefore, we should treat the work-life balance problem from a longer-term perspective.  Try to decide what is the most important in different stages of life, and devote more time and energy to that aspect.

  1. Do what you are best at in different stages of life

Everyone has his / her key competitive advantages.  Try to focus on what you are good at, and worry less about others’ businesses.  Learn the art of delegation.

  1. Keep reevaluating priorities

The world, your work, and your life are always changing.  Therefore, your goals and priorities must be readjusted accordingly.

Life is a process of making decisions.  Think about what is truly important to you, and decide what can be added or deleted from the chapter in your life.  We may not live a successful life, but hopefully we will live an exciting and complete life.
